Fluttering Pulse

Fluttering Pulse (2025) is an installation that translates the heartbeat into the fluttering motion of fabric. When a switch is pressed, a pre-recorded heartbeat is played back through fabric speakers. This is an acoustic device that drives a DC motor using the low-frequency signal of the heartbeat, causing the fabric to flutter through its vibrations. It also functions as an “instrument” that renders the sound as a visual and embodied pulse. Visitors can experience its shifting rhythm by bringing their ears close to the fluttering fabric or by touching it.

We rarely perceive our own heartbeat as sound in daily life. However, during physical exertion, moments of tension, or through physical contact with others, we become aware of our heartbeat’s presence—and of the uncertainty that comes from not being able to control its rhythm at will. Might this be a moment when the body, through its relation to the environment and to others, “operate in the same manner”? Fluttering Pulse invites to reexamine the fluttering and ambiguous relationship between sound, sensation, and the body.

Fluttering Pulse (2025) は、心臓の鼓動を布の揺らめき(fluttering) に翻訳するインスタレーション です。スイッチを押すと、あらかじめ録音された作者の心臓音が布スピーカーによって再生されます。こ れは、心臓音の低周波信号を DC モーターに入力し、その振動によって布を揺らす音響装置であり、そ の音を視覚的・身体的なパルスとして立ち上がらせる“ 楽器 ” でもあります。鑑賞者は、はためく布に耳 を近づけたり、手で触れたりすることで、その変化するリズムを体感できます。

音は他のすべてのもの、音や音でないものと分かちがたく共存している。 音でないものは、耳以外の器官によって受け止められれば、音と同じように作用する。

私たちは普段、自分の鼓動を音として意識することは稀です。しかし、運動をしたときや緊張を感じた とき、あるいは他者との身体的な接触を通して鼓動の存在を意識し、そのリズムを思い通りにできない 不確かさに気づくことになります。これは、身体が環境や他者と関わることで、「音と同じように作用する」 瞬間であるといえるのではないでしょうか。Fluttering Pulse はこのような音、感覚、身体の関係性の 揺らめきや曖昧さを問い直します。
